Purchasing insurance for cars, trucks, and motor vehicles is a crucial way for owners to mitigate risks during operation. Insurance helps protect the legal and financial interests of all involved parties, including vehicle owners, drivers, passengers, and third parties. However, with multiple insurance options available, not everyone fully understands their benefits—even experienced drivers.

Is Car Insurance Mandatory?

Car and truck insurance is a contractual agreement between the vehicle owner and the insurance provider. The owner pays premiums periodically, and in return, the insurer compensates for damages related to people, property, or transported goods, according to the policy terms.

There are two main categories:

  • Mandatory insurance: Compulsory Third-Party Liability Insurance (Civil Liability Insurance)
  • Voluntary insurance: Vehicle physical damage insurance, passenger accident insurance, cargo insurance, etc.

Types of Car & Truck Insurance

Compulsory Third-Party Liability Insurance (Mandatory)

This insurance protects third parties who suffer damage caused by the vehicle owner in traffic accidents. It is legally required in Vietnam.

According to regulations under Decree 168/2024/NĐ-CP, drivers without valid insurance may be fined 400,000 – 600,000 VND.

Coverage scope:

  • Injury or death of passengers under transport contracts caused by the vehicle
  • Damage to third-party life, health, and property

Liability limits:

  • 50,000,000 VND/person/case for bodily injury
  • 50,000,000 VND/case for certain specialized vehicles

Exclusions:

  • Intentional acts causing accidents
  • Hit-and-run incidents
  • Drivers without valid licenses
  • Loss/theft of property during accidents
  • War, terrorism, earthquakes
  • Valuable assets (cash, gold, documents, remains, etc.)

Vehicle Physical Damage Insurance (Optional but Essential)

This is not mandatory but highly recommended. It covers repair or replacement costs when the vehicle is damaged.

Covered risks:

  • Collisions, rollovers, falls, sinking, or impacts from external objects
  • Fire and explosions
  • Natural disasters such as floods, storms, or landslides
  • Total loss due to theft or robbery

Premium calculation:

Insurance Premium = Insured Value × Rate (%)

The higher the premium, the greater the compensation coverage.

Passenger & Driver Accident Insurance

This voluntary insurance protects people inside the vehicle.

Coverage:

  • Compensation for injury or death of passengers and drivers
  • Applies when boarding, disembarking, or during vehicle operation

The premium and coverage limits depend on the agreement between the buyer and the insurer.

Cargo Liability Insurance

This insurance is especially important for businesses transporting high-value goods.

If goods are damaged due to the vehicle owner’s fault, the insurer will compensate according to civil liability regulations.

Coverage scope:

  • Only applies when the accident is caused by the vehicle owner

Compensation includes:

  • Loss prevention and mitigation costs
  • Storage, handling, and warehousing costs
  • Damage assessment costs
  • Value of damaged goods

Compensation limit:

  • From 10,000,000 VND/ton to 50,000,000 VND/ton

Total compensation = Liability limit × Damaged cargo weight
